Safety and Compliance
Module 2 introduces the core safety principles required for operating a biochar production facility responsibly and safely. Throughout the module, you will explore the unique hazards associated with pyrolysis systems, including syngas, bio-oils, combustible dust, thermal energy, and high-pressure environments. The module emphasizes that while biochar production is a high-risk activity, those risks can be effectively managed through proper design, operational discipline, and layered safety systems.
The module also examines practical safety frameworks used across industrial operations, including hazardous area zoning, hierarchy of controls, lockout tagout (LOTO), startup and shutdown procedures, emergency response planning, and incident reporting.
Real-world case studies are used to demonstrate how failures in procedures, communication, or equipment management can lead to serious incidents, while also highlighting the importance of safety culture and continuous risk assessment.
Each section also includes downloadable supporting resources and a full video transcript, which participants may use for reference, note-taking, or translation into their preferred language if needed.
